year. >> mitt romney has had more practice on the debates because of the primary campaign. we'll get to all that this morning. and a big headline overnight from secretary of state hillary clinton. for the first time, coming forward and verbally taking responsibilility for the deadly attack in liby that killed the u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. we'll hear from her in just a few moments. a big political football on capitol hill. >> absolutely. and go game-on, people. we're in the first edition of the male model for one of everybody's favorite game shows. "the price is right." the big debate. >> thank you, lara. >> i cannot wait to meet rob. just 21 days to go. the pressure on the president this time.

jake tapper is at hofstra where the candidates are square off. good morning, jake. >> reporter: good morning, george. president obama referred to the race as tied. but in some polls, mitt romney has a slight lead. it makes the second debate far more important than president obama could have anticipated. president obama is hunred down at this luxurious golf resort, taking an occasional break from his debate prep, with a stroll around the rolling greens. this is how serious the president is about his debate prep. he left his golf clubs at the white house. mitt romney's mock debate is played by ohio rob senator rob portman. >> how did it go, senator? >> great. >> reporter: tonight is the one and only town hall style debate. it's a performance that can bring curve balls. >> i'm exhausted.

i'm exhausted at defending you, defending your administration. >> reporter: mitt romney will look for momentum following his first debate performance. but he has to knock down the idea that he cannot relate to the average american. candy crowley agitated both campaigns ahead of the debate by suggesting, heaven forbid, that she might ask follow-up questions. >> if something comes up that could use a little further explanation, it might be that the question said oranges and you answer eed apples. >> reporter: in past town halls, it was the candidates themselves, and not the way they wanted. like the 2008 debate, where john mccain seemed to be wandering aimlessly around the stage. or in 2000, when al gore walked up to governor george w. bush. in a way that governor bush later referred to as getting in his chili. and this classic move from

george h.w. bush, where he checked the time. he would soon have plenty of it. this town hall debate provides candidates an opportunity to have an exchange with voters about their concerns. but it also provides them with an opportunity to mess up that interaction and appear out of touch and clueless. it really is high-takes. let's bring in matthew dowd with more. last time, president obama came in with high expectations. this time, expectations are reversed. >> the president came in four or five points ahead. and it's at best tied or a point or so behind. he has to bring his a-game. he can't show up like alex rodriguez. he has to hit the pitches. he can't be aggressive. if he is not, he and michelle might get the boxes and call the movers. if he doesn't bring his a-game, he might not be in t white

house. >> that means answering the questions of the voters first, before you pivot to attack. and ese town hall meetings, we've seen the stage craft matters even more. >> style matters. the president in the last debate, came across as passive. came across as without energy. he has to bridge the energy. but he can't be aggressive because he can't be aggressive to voters. >> how about mitt romney? my risk for him tonight? >> there is risk. he has momentum. if it stops dead in his tracks, the president has an advantage in the electoral college. but there is risk for mitt romney. >> matthew dowd, thank you very much. watch tonight. diane sawyer and i will anchor live coverage right here on abc. now, to the big headline from secretary of state hillary clinton overnight. she is taking responsibility for security failures in the deadly attack in benghazi, libya, that

left a u.s. ambassador dead and three other americans, as well. abc's reena ninan spoke with hillary clinton and joins us from lima, peru, this morning. good morning to you, reena. >> reporter: elizabeth, good morning. we sat down last night for an interview with the secretary of state. and we got answers for the first time on the situation in libya. >> let me say this. we will track down whoever did this and hold them accountable. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton appeared to fall on her sword. >> i take responsibility. i'm in charge of the state department. 60,000-plus people, all over the world, 275 posts. the president and the vice president, certainly wouldn't be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals. >> reporter: in her first comments that the state department acknowledged the attack on chris stevens and the ambassador, the secretary of state said she, not the

president, was responsible for lapses in security. in an interview with abc news, clinton, who is traveling in peru, acknowledged there were concerns about militants in libya. when did the u.s. become aware of transnational extremists operating in eastern libya? >> we have long known that extremists have come out of libya. we understood there would be an effort to try to re-establish a presence of extremist bases and operations. it's having we were focused on and working on. >> reporter: as for reports that the u.s. has special operation forces in the region. would the administration be willing to strike them before a u.s. election? >> there's an intense effort in our government. and i think our track record is pretty good eventually, we will find you. >> reporter: secretary clinton told the president of peru, she's eager to get back quickly

because she wants to watch tonight's debate. >> thank you very much. and josh elliott is here with more on the morning's headlines. >> we begin with breaking news about the young girl from pakistan, nearly killed by the taliban because she spoke out for women's right. doctors in england, where malala yousafzai, is being treated, is giving her details on her condition, after a security scare that led to intense moments overnight. nick schifrin is there with the latest. good morning to you, nick. >> reporter: good morning, josh. this was a security scare that turned into a false alarm. two people tried to get into the hospital last night to see malala. police turned them away. but somehow the hospital communicated to reporters this morning that those people had been arrested. it goes to show how much tension there is over this girl's security, since the taliban are promising to try to kill her, no matter where she is. and it just goes to show how this fearless 14-year-old has really touched the taliban's nerve.

the hospital, though, is very pleased with her progress. she could make a full recovery. and a lot of people will be heartened by that news. this girl has become a symbol of resistance against the taliban. and an elegant advocate for girls' education. her supporters are saying she will get better. she will go home. and, josh, she will go back to school. >> that's good news, indeed. nick schifrin, in london, thank you. now, a health alert in the country. more medications are being tied to the meningitis outbreak. thus far, 214 cases and 15 deaths have been reported in the states you see highlighted here. now, the fda is sounding an alarm about two other drugs made at the new england compounding center. the pharmacy blamed for the outbreak. including injections given to patients who had eye operations and open-heart surgery. doctors are being urged to contact all patients receiving any injections made by the company. hikers missing for three

days in glacier national park have been found alive. jasen hiser, and neal peckens, two virginians, faced fierce winds and snow, until a 50-person rescue team spotted them. they were in good shape. that's good news. and signs that shoppers are spending again. amazon is hiring some 50,000 workers for the holiday season and expect many of them to stay on permanently. retailers are reporting higher than expected sales. a shohocking scene when a preschoolteacher took her class on a day trip. she was pulled over for driving all 19 kids in the class in her car. >> what? are you kidding me? >> i'm not kidding you, elizabeth. not one bit. 11 in the backseat, 6 in the hatch back, and the rest in the front.

police gave her a ticket. >> i hope the parents fired her. >> we'll have an update. we saw this at the top of the show. do not stick your head outside of a train, people. a teen thought it would be fun to stick it out. the problem is, there's a train baring down. and she was just able to get her head back inside the train, again, missing her head by inches. she fell on the floor, in shock. she is okay. still, keep all hands, feet, heads in the train. >> that's a lesson learned. josh, thanks very much. the latest on the scandal shaking a wealthy resort town in maine. a zumba instructor has been arrested for running a prostitution ring out of her dance studio. >> reporter: this morning, 21 men allegedly caught up in the zumba prostitution investigation has been revealed. late monday, the police released

the first 21 names about the 20 men and 1 woman being investigated. 21 of them now charged with engaging in prostitution. police believe they were clients of 29-year-old zumba fitness instructor alexis wright, charged with running a prostitution operation out of her fitness studio. the men summoned have to appear in court on december 5th. while police did not include ages and addresses for the alleged johns, overnight, abc news reached two men on the list, who confirmed they have been charged. monday, the judge denied the motion filed been an attorney for two of the alleged johns, quote, it would be a harm to their professional reputations and professional relationships." meantime, wright has pleaded not guilty to 106 counts related to her alleged prostitution ring. abc news exclusively tracked

down wright at her home. can we talk to you about the allegations? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: the allegations are not true? >> i'm calling the police. >> reporter: okay. police say they have gathered over 100 hours of video as evidence, recorded by wright and her alleged accomplice, 57-year-old mark strong sr. he has pleaded not guilty. strong's attorney says he welcomes the release of the name. >> usually, disclosed to the public, i don't think should be held back in this case. >> reporter: we contacted two men who confirmed they are on the list. one said he made a mistake and would like to move on. the other said, quote, we will all be exonerated. abc news has decided not to publish the list until we can verify all involved.

let's go to dan abrams to get more on this. a bit of a compromise by the judge in this case. they released the names but not the address and age. >> typically when someone is accused of a crime, the name is released, along with the age and address. why did they not get released? they are also crime victims because they were allegedly recorded, taped having sex. they're also crime victims. that's the compromise the judge has reached here. i think it's a bit of a stretch legally. now, you have people saying, well, wait a second. it's not me. all these names are being released. >> more than 100 names on the list total. you're out of luck if you have a common name like john smith. >> honey, i promise it's not that dan abrams. it's not me. that must be happening because

all of these names are being released without addresses or ages or other information. now, people are being forced to effectively admit or deny they are the person whose name has been released. and that's really the key here. this is just an embarrassment in crime because you're talking about a very low-level misdemeanor. >> i'll vouch for you, dan. i'm sure you not on there. >> there is a tv personality now on the list. i can now say, for the first time, it is not me. >> thank goodness. >> it's also not george. okay. now, to the uproar over flamin' hot cheetos, now banned in many schools around the country. the snack is popular with kids, with its own facebook fan page and online competitions on who can eat the most cheetos the fastest. why is this snack, which has been around for years, suddenly under fire? linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: this music video about the bite-sized snack has more than 3 million hits on

youtube. but this morning, flamin' hot cheetos are under fire. school districts in california and new mexico are trying to ban them. and illinois and rockford public schools where they used to sell 150,000 bags of flamin' hots each year, are off the menu. >> if children want to bring in snacks that are high in fat and calories, that's their choice. they can do that. >> reporter: school officials say the concern is their nutritional value or lack thereof. each of the snack-sized bags contains 26 grams of fat. and a quarter of the sodium recommended for the entire day. and on top of the artificial coloring and flavoring, they are highly addictive. and there may be science behind it. >> our brain is hard-wired to find things like fat and salt really rewarding. now, we have foods that have

catalog, be ready to be dazzled with the affordability. we're going to start with new details on the las vegas firefighter accused of hiring a homeless hitman to beat his wife to death. both men appeared in court for the first time. and abbie boudreau has the story. >> reporter: when police found shanna, the las vegas cocktail waitress and mother, brutally murdered in late september, it seemed like a random crime. but this morning, prosecutors are seeking an indictment against her husband, george, a las vegas city firefighter and west point graduate, saying he was the mastermind behind the gruesome attack. accusing him of offering this homeless man, $20,000 of beating his once-beautiful bride to death. >> the minute i heard the way she had died, i knew he had something to do with it. >> reporter: and this morning, her closest friends are breaking their silence.

telling "gma" her husband was an abusive husband. >> he was known for being controlling of her. and this is a case of him trying to control her. >> one of those, if i can't have her, nobody else can. >> reporter: police say the evidence speaks for itself. the details of the alleged murder plot read like a crime novel. investigators say george was in constant contact with this homeless man, noel stevens, calling him 86 times in september. the two exchanged phone calls in the moments before police believe shanna was murdered. police say they obtained surveillance video of the two men walking out of a hardware store together. overnight, stevens' attorney refused to comment. but george's lawyer issued a statement on behalf of his family. saying, in part, george did not commit the crimes he is charged with. and while all marriages have their ups and downs, george and

shauna were committed to each other. >> to become a fireman and help people, how is it that you, you know, you want to save lives? but you take a life? >> reporter: for "good morning america," abbie boudreau, abc news, los angeles. we're going to bring in nancy grace from atlanta. and here in new york, "gma's" legal analyst, dan abrams. good morning to you both. nancy, i want to start with you. there's lots of circumstantial evidence as this case lays out. how strong does the case seem? >> i have three names that summarize the case. they are walmart, pawnshops and palm's casino. everybody knows the degree, the surveillance, at walmart. and here you have this firefighter, a west point grad, i might add, hanging out with a homeless guy. and they go on several shopping sprees.

they're all caught on video. and, dan abrams, you know the sophistication used at walmart to catch shoplifters. nasa could get tips from them. then, at a pawnshop. he pays another friend, 200 bucks, to pawn the wife's wedding band and ring. and of course, they go cash in her tips at the palm's casino, even more security cameras. it's a video game for a jury. >> and the key is going to be linking the two of them, right? he may have done it. i'm not -- likely will be his defense, which is trying to distance himself as much as possible from stevens. saying, he may have had something to do with this. i have something to do with it. i had him do odd jobs around my house, et cetera. but you can't link me to the crime. the problem is, when you're talking about 86 phone calls -- >> that's a lot of phone calls. >> and this is -- i talked about

this before. hit men don't exist. you can't call and find a hitman. so, people end up turning to their local homeless guy sometimes and offering them $600. >> or a -- >> only $600? >> that handy man. when you said the key, i thought you were being literal. but remember, this guy, this firefighter, west point grad, goes and gets an extra key made to his wife's apartment. and there's no forced entry. there's nothing. the homeless guy clearly used the key the firefighter made and gave him. >> doesn't this, both of you, seem surprisingly low-rent for a murder-for-hire plot? not just $600. but kill her with a hammer? >> first of all, he was supposed to allegedly pay up to $20,000. but murder-for-hire and we talked about this before, it doesn't happen how it happens in the movies. there's no brad pitt out there to be hired to do this sort of

stuff. >> the other thing is, the use a homeless guy, noel stevens, to turn state's evidence against the husband. >> you think think cut a deal with him, nancy? >> yeah. i do. i noticed that they -- the lawyer says he didn't do the crime. he may not have bludgeoned the woman to death. but to say he was the mastermind is a gross exaggeration, the reality is, i want to break it down to the victim. when paramedics got there, they could not tell -- the injuries were so severe, whether she had been shot or bludgeoned to death. can you imagine that oscar-winning performance when the husband comes in and goes -- when he finds his dead wife. please. >> that's why i don't think think will cut a deal with stevens. i don't think that the person the authorities believe bludgeoned her, that they cut some sort of deal with him. >> if they got such a strong

case -- >> with the hammer that the husband bought at walmart. >> if they have the strong case with the surveillance video you outlined, with the receipts, with the cell phone calls, why would they cut a deal with either side? >> i don't know why prosecutors ever cut deals. i think they should all stew in the same pot together. but they may cut a deal with the homeless guy, to ensure that guilty verdict on the husband. >> not going to happen. >> that would be the only reason. i hope you're right, dan. >> okay. dan, nancy, we'll be staying on top of this, as the court proceedings continue. it's time for the weather. let's get to sam champion. >> what you can hire is an incredible rendering of this hurricane. hurricane rafael, by the way, the 3d view. this looks like it's a dead shot for bermuda.

anybody else on the radio. what do you mean like that? >> i think at times, in nashville, you have -- >> a sound? >> session players that come in and play on everybody's records. and i've chosen to use my road band in the studio with me. you know, and i think that just kind of sets us apart. everything from my producer to our engineers, to my band. i think it gives a different sound. and makes our records not sound like anybody else's. >> with all of the record sales, all of the number one hits, the cma nominations, has come fame. and you call that, quote, a learning experience. what do you mean by that? >> you know, i haven't been famous all that long. it's something i'm still learning how to deal with. and you know, something that i, you know, learn from every day. >> and your family, too, i imagine. you recently had an incident where you did publicly apologize. it was a raucous night and stuff happened. >> it's an unfortunate thing. but i've kind of said, you know,
